In fire circuits, on piles in harbours, on hulls… Corrodys works against corrosion
Corrosion rust and bacteria is a great deal for industrialists. These natural phenomena can lead to dramatic costs.
Corrodys is a corrosion technical centre created in 2003. The University of Caen brings its support to this lab and puts it up: 15 employees: engineers, researchers and technicians to meet precisely their clients’ requirements in shipyards, building and public works, metallurgy industry, food industry…
To predict risks
Corrodys has been coordinating a European program since 18 months. This program purpose is to study some aspects of the degradation on infrastructures in harbours.
“Metal corrosion can be influenced by micro-organisms”, Emilie Malard, coordinator, said. “We are studying different aspects of low-water corrosion. We identify which bacteria species are involved in these corrosion processes. We want to explain why these corrosion attacks occur;”
Three years will be necessary to this program. Three European ports are implied in the program. ArcelorMittal, the huge multinational company is also a partner. “Industrialists need to understand these phenomena. The goal of the program is to achieve a predictive tool”
More than 50% of Corrodys business comes from maritime concerns. But you can find corrosion in any industry. “Height types of corrosion are listed. Corrosion is a chemical or mechanical phenomenon. A gas or a liquid flow in a pipe can lead to corrosion”.
Despite its youth, Corrodys has become a well-known and appreciate technical centre in corrosion amongst industrialists and research centres worldwide. “The first studies in corrosion are quite recent especially in biocorrosion. No more than 30 years”
Biocorrosion is an up-and-coming science. Many works has still to be done to discover, explain and apply discovery in this field. Corrodys is also an assessor in biocides. What is a biocide done for? “It has to comply with 3 criteria: destroy the undesirable micro-organisms and be safe for materials it cleans and the environment.” In a word, to be green friendly.”
